| Undergraduate Minor Programme in Portuguese |
|
The BA Minor Programme in Portuguese offers students the only opportunity in Ireland to obtain a stand-alone degree in the language and culture of Portugal, Brazil and the countries of Portuguese-speaking Africa. The subject is normally taken from ab initio level and may be combined with any other Arts subject on offer in UCD (subject to timetable restrictions).
Portuguese may also be taken as part of the BA Programmes in Spanish (25-credit Major, 30-credit Major), as part of the BComm (International) in Spanish, or as an elective subject. Elective students may wish to dip into the language, by taking a few language modules. Alternatively, they may follow the language syllabus through all three levels (taking their 10 elective credits in Portuguese over three years), thus acquiring a 'mini minor' in the subject and degree-level linguistic competency.
Students studying Portuguese may opt to spend a year abroad via the Erasums/Socrates exchange scheme, and the School facilitates exchanges with universities in Oporto and Coimbra. We strongly recommend that anyone seeking a high level of proficiency in a foreign language spend as much time as possible immersed in one of the cultures and societies of that language, and preferably a full academic year (you need not study whilst abroad, but be aware that employment opportunities vary from country to country).
